I met Rob 40 years ago and we’ve been friends ever since.  We met when he was the newly elected trustee for Bowen Island, and I was a community planner for the Islands Trust. As an islands trustee his mandate was to preserve and protect the islands for future generations.  I saw someone who was enthusiastic, smart and was dedicated to helping his community.

Rob is probably the hardest working person I know.  I remember when Rob worked full time in a senior position for the BC government and, at the same time,  attended law school at UVIC…and, he and his partner Inga had a young baby… and, they were building a house in North Saanich.  We were at their house for dinner and I asked Inga how Rob managed to juggle it all.  She showed us their spare room where Rob had all of his law course readings for the semester laid out in the floor, one long row for each course.  She explained that Rob would get up by 5:00 and spend a couple of hours working on his law courses, then head downtown to his demanding full time job, as head of the  BC Government’s Information and Privacy Branch.  After a long day of work, interspersed with trips to UVIC for classes, he’d home for dinner and “family time”, and do more law school work before heading off to bed. Weekends were equally busy, as he worked around the property and continued his studies.  Now that energy is being focussed on this campaign.

When we’ve gotten together over the years the conversations were often about community issues and current events.  He was always interested in discussing issues that I’d worked on, such as housing and climate change.  Rob’s broad background in banking, government, law and politics helped him to quickly grasp the issues, no matter how complex.

I know that Rob will work tirelessly for the community and that he’ll be very effective in the Legislature.
